A Field Trip with Purpose: Girl Scouts Visit Gitzell Fair Trade

A little weaving, a lot of learning, and a closer look at the people and traditions behind handmade goods.

What better way to learn about the world than through the things we make?

We recently welcomed Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri Troop 492 to the Gitzell Fair Trade warehouse in St. Charles, Missouri, for a special visit filled with creativity, curiosity, and hands-on learning.

The girls had the opportunity to explore our warehouse, discover the stories behind our handmade products, and learn about the talented artisans and communities we partner with across Africa.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

At Gitzell Fair Trade, every basket, bead, and handcrafted piece has a story. Our warehouse is filled with beautiful examples of traditional craftsmanship, and we love sharing those stories with the next generation.

During their visit, the Girl Scouts learned about fair trade, explored different materials and weaving techniques, and discovered how handmade products connect people across cultures.

One of the highlights? Trying their hands at weaving!

Through this hands-on experience, the girls got a closer look at the patience, skill, and creativity involved in making something by hand. It's one thing to admire a beautiful woven basket, but another to begin understanding the work behind it.

Small Hands, Big Connections

Experiences like these are about more than learning a new skill. They're opportunities to introduce young people to different cultures, encourage curiosity, and help them think about the people behind the products we use every day.

We believe understanding where things come from—and who makes them—can help inspire more thoughtful choices and a greater appreciation for craftsmanship.

And sometimes, the best lessons happen when we put down our screens and start making something with our hands.
