A Moment of Stillness at Ol Pejeta

There are places that don’t ask anything of you. They simply invite you to be still.

A recent trip to Ol Pejeta Conservancy was one of those experiences for me. Ol Pejeta is serene in a way that’s hard to explain… the kind of place where relaxation settles into your body without effort. It’s also one of those rare landscapes where seeing the Big Five feels almost inevitable, not rushed or forced, just part of the rhythm of the land.

One moment in particular has stayed with me.

We came across a lion on a kill.

It was intense and strangely majestic at the same time. There was raw power in the scene, but also an incredible stillness. The lion’s focus. The quiet around it. No chaos, just presence.

Later, watching a whole pride during a midday feast felt like something straight out of a documentary. There was an unspoken choreography to it all. The hierarchy of who eats first. Who waits. Cubs attempting to sneak in a bite when they thought no one was watching. An occasional low growl, not aggressive, just a reminder of order.

Nature has its own systems. Its own balance. Its own rules.

This trip wasn’t only about wildlife, though. I traveled with my son, my nephews, and my nieces so they could experience the beauty of Kenya’s wildlife, what many people call “going on safari.” For us, it was something deeper.

Kenya is a place we go to unwind. A place to catch our breath. A place where Mother Nature does the work of reminding you what matters.

There is something incredibly grounding about being surrounded by open land, animals moving freely, and skies that feel endless. The days slowed down. We laughed more. We rested. We simply were.

Safaris are often described as a “must-do” for anyone visiting Kenya, especially during the Great Migration in the Maasai Mara. And that’s true. But beyond the spectacle, safaris offer something quieter - perspective.

Being in nature like that helps you reset. It reminds you that life doesn’t always need to be hurried. That peace doesn’t come from doing more, but from noticing more.

As I sat there, watching my family take it all in, I found myself thinking: Maybe it’s time for another fair trade safari to Kenya.

Not as an escape, but as a reconnection… to land, to people, to purpose.

This trip helped us relax and unwind in a way nothing else could. And moments like these are a big part of why I believe so deeply in slowing down, honoring place, and staying connected to the environments and communities that shape us.

This is the first of many reflections I hope to share. This is about the experiences that quietly influence how I move through the world.

Sometimes, the most meaningful lessons come when you stop trying to capture them and simply sit with what’s in front of you.
