Nov 11, 2025by Zellipah Githui

In early November 2025, Gitzell Fair Trade was honored to welcome Kenya’s Ambassador to the United States, David Kerich, during his multi-day visit to St. Louis. Traveling from Washington, D.C., Ambassador Kerich spent several days meeting with community leaders, exploring our region’s cultural and economic landscape, and strengthening the connection between Kenya and St. Louis.

His visit highlighted a powerful message: international partnership thrives when communities work together across culture, innovation, and shared opportunity.

Strengthening Community Ties at the Mayor’s Office

One of the Ambassador’s first stops was the St. Louis Mayor’s Office, where he joined local leaders committed to uplifting the African immigrant community. Conversations focused on strengthening support systems, celebrating cultural identity, and deepening the city’s connection with Kenyan families who now call St. Louis home.

Trade, Innovation & Agricultural Research

Amb. Kerich also visited the World Trade Center St. Louis and the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, where he met with scientists, researchers, and business leaders.

Discussions centered around:

  • Expanding trade between Kenya and the U.S.

  • Advancing agricultural innovation

  • Supporting research on African indigenous crops being studied right here in St. Louis

  • Fostering collaboration in science, health, and business

He emphasized endless opportunities for shared growth  and invited the St. Louis business community to join the upcoming Trade Mission to Kenya in early 2026.

A Meaningful Visit to Gitzell Fair Trade

One of the most memorable moments of his visit was a stop at the Gitzell Fair Trade warehouse. Here, Ambassador Kerich saw firsthand how artisan-made products from Kenya travel from the hands of makers to shelves across the U.S.

The tour showcased how one small business, started with a mission to empower women artisans, has grown to support hundreds of families across Africa through sustainable employment and handcrafted goods.

For our team, it was a powerful reminder that fair trade work is global, local, personal, and transformative.

A Night of Celebration at the Vitendo4Africa Gala

The Ambassador concluded his visit with a keynote speech at the Vitendo4Africa Gala, where he addressed more than 400 community members. His message focused on unity, shared prosperity, and the growing bridge between Kenya and St. Louis.

His words inspired many, emphasizing that when communities invest in one another, both nations thrive.

Looking Ahead

Ambassador Kerich’s visit underscored the importance of strengthening cultural and economic ties between Kenya and St. Louis. It also highlighted the role that community organizations, research institutions, fair trade businesses, and immigrant-led groups play in shaping a more connected and equitable world.

At Gitzell Fair Trade, we remain committed to uplifting artisans, fostering cross-cultural relationships, and supporting global development rooted in dignity and opportunity.
