This handled version features the same signature Tonga weaving technique, with a light-toned horizontal exterior pattern contrasted by a darker geometric interior. Woven on radials of creeping vines and finished with palm leaves, sometimes dyed naturally using bark and roots, each bowl reflects the deep cultural artistry of Zambian basketry.
Tonga baskets are crafted with a heavy, double-thick weave that takes significant time and skill to produce. The back is coiled and looped together, while the front is woven over the structure in a style similar to plateau baskets.
