Bring rich texture, cultural tradition, and artisan craftsmanship into your home with our Fair Trade Tonga Basket Bowl, handwoven in the Munyumbwe region of Zambia. Known for their distinctive construction and bold interior patterns, Tonga baskets are celebrated across Africa for their strength, artistry, and time-intensive weaving technique.

These earthy, rustic baskets are woven with a unique double-wall design, creating two different visual experiences in one piece. The exterior features a lighter, horizontal pattern, while the interior showcases a darker, geometric design with vertical detailing, making each basket feel like functional art.

Tonga baskets are traditionally woven on radials of creeping vines, with palm leaves sometimes dyed using natural bark and roots to achieve their deep tones and contrast. Each basket is crafted using a heavy, double-thick weave that requires exceptional skill and extra time to complete. The back is coiled and looped together, and the front is woven over the structure in a technique similar to plateau baskets, resulting in a sturdy, shallow bowl built to last.

Perfect as a decorative bowl, tabletop centerpiece, fruit basket, or catch-all for keys and small essentials, this piece adds warmth and authentic African craftsmanship to any space. No two are exactly alike, and natural variations in weave and color are part of the handmade process.
